As we come to the end of 2021, I’d like to first thank each and every one of our students, staff, parents, and community members for their continued support of the Owego Apalachin Central School District. We recognize that the last couple of years have been nothing short of challenging in so many ways - but the continuous support of our school community has been steadfast.
I’d like to highlight a handful of the things that have been going on this school year so far! We have so much to be proud of here at Owego Apalachin!
A Reminder that there is no school December 23, 2021 through January 2, 2022. School will resume on Monday, January 3rd. I wish everyone a happy and safe Holiday break, and we will see you all in 2022!
2021 3rd-8th Grade Scores
We are thrilled to announce that we received our ELA & Math state assessment scores which rank at the top of our region. Cumulatively we are ranked number 1 in Math and number 2 in ELA. While students only completed a portion of the assessment last year, we still received comparable data to our region and state. We are extremely proud of our students and staff for staying focused on student achievement throughout the past year's challenges. The data is showing us that we continue to be on an upward trajectory. For more details, you can view Mr. Georgia’s recent presentation to the Board of Education here: OACSD 3rd-8th Grade State Assessment Scores Video.
Success and Leadership
Over the past few years we have been working with Becky Bowers from GST Boces. Becky has been leading a program around Student Success and Leadership. We were fortunate this year to expand this program to grades K-8 with the addition of a few new staff members. This program is focused on our students' development of skills such as respect, communication, collaboration, leadership, creative innovative thinking and problem solving. These are all skills that our local business partners say they are looking for in current and future employees. Overall, these skills will help create a strong foundation for student success. Becky, along with Mr. Schofield, Mr. Beatty and Mr. Hallenbeck presented to the Board of Education at the November 29th Meeting. Their full presentation can be found here: OA Success and Leadership Board of Education Presentation Video, as well as a copy of the powerpoint they shared with the Board of Education.
OACSD is committed to making this school year the best that it can be! And that relies on listening to you. That’s why the district is using Let’s Talk!, an online customer service solution, that makes it easy for students, parents, employees, and community members to engage with district leaders whenever their schedules allow. Let’s Talk! is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week from any computer, tablet, or smartphone. Simply click/open the Let’s Talk! button/pop-out tab on the district’s website (www.oacsd.org) or go directly to Let’s Talk! Landing page link. Then select a topic to start a conversation.

Transportation - Toys for Tots & Join the Team!
The amazing staff at the OA Transportation Department stepped up to help Tioga County children this Holiday season by bringing the Toys for Tots effort to the district. Boxes were placed in each school lobby, as well as the Transportation Office to collect new, unwrapped toys. The school community collected several boxes of toys and they were delivered this past week for distribution ahead of the Holiday. The Transportation staff intends to make this an annual event - so look forward to hearing about it again next Fall! You can read more about the event in this Pennysaver article from a couple of weeks ago.
The district is seeking individuals to drive school buses for us! If you or someone you know is interested in working as a School Bus Driver, the district would love for you to join the team! We are currently hiring Full Time Bus Drivers starting at $18.92 per hour. Apply here: Join Our Team - Transportation Department Jobs
At this time, we are critically low on bus drivers - although we will do everything in our power to keep students in school, parents and families should be prepared for potential schedule changes, delays or other interruptions to the daily schedule through the winter months. With the cold and flu season upon us, as well as the NYS requirements for quarantine and return-to-work protocols, the district could drop below the required number of drivers to transport students on their regular schedule. In this event, a plan would be communicated to families as soon as possible. We are hopeful that we will carry on as normal and that no alternate schedule will be necessary.
We have been very excited to have live performances back on campus this school year! Each of our buildings has hosted at least one concert - with several more on the schedule as we move into the new year! Our music students and staff have done an excellent job preparing for each concert and their hard work shows in the excelled performances! The district continues to stream the live performances on our YouTube Channel. These are also available for replay immediately following each show! All of our Musical Performances can be found on our YouTube Music Playlist.
In November, we concluded our first full sports season since the Fall of 2019. We were thrilled to have athletes and coaches filling the field, courts and pool all summer and fall. It was great to see our campus so full of life. We had a successful season all around as each of our Fall teams qualified for the NYSPHSAA Fall Scholar Athlete Team Award. This means that every team held an average GPA of 90% or higher! This is certainly something to be proud of, and it’s a top priority for our athletes to be successful in the classroom. The fall season ended with our Boys Soccer Team as Section IV Champions and Regional Runner up; Girls Soccer as Section IV Co-Champions; Volleyball as Section IV Champions; Boys & Girls Cross Country as Section IV Runner Ups; Kaelyn Katchuk Section IV Diving Champion and placing 17th in the State; Jaelyn Chrysler placing 13th in the Individual Girls Cross Country State Championship. We are very proud of all of our Fall Athletes and look forward to more successes with each season!
