OES STEAM Team

Owego Elementary STEAM team competed in the BOCES Engineering Day and won 3rd place out of 50 teams!  The team consisted of Geneva Crawford, Braelea McLaren, Owen Raeff, and Garrett Whatley.

Their challenge was to design and create a Rube Goldberg type device that uses a number of different energy and material transfers towards the end task of getting a ball into a cup.  They had an opportunity to design and build while learning about the six simple machines – the wheel and axle, lever, inclined plane, pulley, screw, and the wedge.

The team used what they have learned in Mrs. Hettinger's STEAM class and applied it to their challenge by working together, helping each other, working collaboratively, using their individual skills and most importantly having a growth mindset.

They were scored on number of steps, successful completion of the end goal, duration of the run, reliability, complexity of construction, neatness and quality of construction, a written list of steps and an oral presentation. The team scored an amazing score of 117 points, one point less than 2nd place!

OES is very proud of their Engineering Team, they did a great job!
