Owego Free Academy Junior, Ashleigh Allen, was accepted into the All-Eastern Mixed Choir Honors Ensemble. She will perform in Pittsburgh, PA from April 4-7.
“This is a huge honor for the Owego Apalachin Music Department,” says choral director Megan Burrell. All-Eastern Honors Ensembles encompass high school musicians from Maine to Florida. 850 total students were accepted into the mixed chorus, treble chorus, symphonic band, symphonic orchestra and jazz ensemble and this was an extremely competitive year. Students eligible for All-Eastern must be accepted into their respective All State ensemble and then apply for All Eastern. Ashleigh sang with the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) All State Treble Choir in December. In a 25-year history, there have been six other Owego Free Academy alumni accepted into All Eastern Honors Ensembles.
Including Ashleigh, a total of four
students were accepted from the Broome-Tioga region, one from Maine-Endwell and
two from Vestal.
Ashleigh is a well-rounded student at OFA. Her successes are numerous and transcend just her musical talents. Ashleigh is a leader in the classroom, working hard to keep high grades. As a student athlete, she is a member of the OFA Girls Swimming and Diving Team and OFA Softball Team. Additionally, she is active with Yes! Leads and volunteers at her church. Megan Burrell states, “Ashleigh is a positive influence on her peers, always leading by example. It has been a pleasure and honor to teach her.”
