NYS Portrait Of A Graduate

The Owego Apalachin Central School District (OACSD) is closely following the development of the New York State Education Department's Portrait of a Graduate, which was recently adopted by the New York State Board of Regents. This is a significant step toward changing the framework of New York's education system to ensure students graduate with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed after high school.

This change will be rolled out gradually to minimize disruption for students. The new statewide requirements will begin with students entering 9th grade in the 2029-30 school year. The four key shifts are:

  • Adopting the New York State Portrait of a Graduate: Students will need to show proficiency in both the new Portrait of a Graduate model and the existing NYS high school learning standards.

  • Redefining Credits and Learning Experiences: The way students can demonstrate proficiency will be expanded, giving them more options to earn credits and meet graduation requirements.

  • Ending Mandated Regents Exams: While students can still use state exams to meet diploma requirements, they will no longer be required to pass Regents Exams to graduate.

  • Moving to a Single Diploma: All students who meet the new requirements will earn one New York State high school diploma. The "Advanced Designation" will become a seal or endorsement instead of a separate diploma.

The ultimate goal of these changes is to ensure every student is not only academically prepared but also has the knowledge, skills, and qualities needed to succeed in a complex world. This aligns with OACSD's mission and strategic plan, and the district is committed to supporting students, staff, and families as we navigate this transition.
